Edwards Restaurant Mandurah

Client Brief:

The client’s brief was to maximise the site and overcome wind issues that the existing tenants were having. In addition to this there was a requirement to upgrade the existing building and add in an additional tenant, Merchant Tea and Coffee.

Design Solution:

In order to fit in the additional tenant, Merchant Tea and Coffee the existing tenants (a fish and chip shop and an ice cream shop) had to be shuffled around. Merchant Tea and Coffee was added into the structure against the Mandurah Estuary and was also given a spacious alfresco area beneath an existing Morton Bay Fig Tree. The alfresco dining area was given a timber deck and was raised above the Morton Bay Fig Tree’s roots to avoid damage to the tree and also make use of what would have otherwise been an almost useless space.

A new pergola structure was constructed on the first floor of the existing Edward’s Restaurant so that the wind could be controlled by closing off areas of the verandah. On the ground floor bi-fold doors were used extensively to allow the indoor areas of the various tenancies to be easily opened up to the environment or closed off quickly when the wind became too strong.

Areas around the building were re-landscaped to provide a more inviting image as the building is in a very public area between Mandurah Terrace and the Mandurah Estuary.

A bright colour palette of purple, yellow, silver and black was chosen to help give the building a new and iconic appearance so that it could be easily identified.

Internal fit-outs of all tenancies were completed by others.
