Client Brief:
The client’s brief was to convert a very run-down two story building into a modern city centre building with ground floor retail and first floor offices, and all as quickly as possible.
Design Solution:
Due to the very tight timeframes construction was started on the building before documentation was completed.
As the ‘Target’ building opposite was completed by Meyer Shircore some years earlier it was referenced in terms of awning and louvre details. The prominent corners of the newly converted building had tower signage elements added which were clad in metallic horizontal Colorbond panels and Alucobond ribs. A strong colour palette of orange, white, charcoal and silver was used in conjunction with the building’s modern façade.
The decision to use modern materials, colours and forms was taken to create an aesthetic contrast to the existing heritage buildings adjoining and opposite the converted building rather than a simple and crude attempt to cheaply mimic the heritage buildings adjacent.
The interior of the first floor office foyer was finished in white terrazzo floor finishes with white walls, stainless steel and glass balustrading with glass lift cladding to give a modern contemporary feel.
The interior fitout of ground floor retail tenancies was completed by others.
