Salvation Army
BRIEF:
- Provide new 200 seat worship hall with associated functions
- Storage
- Ablutions
- Offices
- Existing face brick / tile building to be retained but 'masked' from view.
- Provide greater street presence to corner site.
SOLUTIONS:
The Worship Hall has been oriented on a contradictory axis to the entry. The entry sequence is directed by a low canopy unifying the new hall and existing functions - the hall 'masked' by a face brick parapet giving a sense of solidity and permanence.
A definite street presence to both Norwood Road and Francisco Street has been achieved via rectilinear forms and recessed fenestration to the Office / Counsel Room and the addition of a dominant crucifix to Fransico Street. To Norwood Road, the placement of a curved parapet wall alludes to the scale of the Worship Hall behind.
Natural light via clerestory windows enhances the contemplative nature of the worship space.
