Client Brief:
Meyer Shircore had previously completed the refurbishment of the original building in 2000. Structural provisions were made to allow for expected future expansion. The brief for the Stage 2 refurbishment was to add a second level and increase office space to meet their expanding operations.
Design Solution:
Construction time was minimised as the suspended concrete slab for the new office level was already in place from the Stage 1 refurbishment. The existing roof and structure was simply raised to the new level and lightweight steel framing clad with compressed sheet seamlessly encloses the new office.
The north corner of the building was also revisited in Stage 2 with the intent to address the solar heat gain through an area with extensive glazing. A large stainless steel mesh screen was designed to enclose this area, set off the face of the building, from awning to ground level which acts to shade the building from direct sun yet still allowing natural light to filter into the building and maintains uninterrupted views from the offices within. The screen also subtlety adds visual interest to the building and balances the volume of the new addition.
The internal fit outs were completed by others.
